If you're looking for a ground-breaking Super Bowl commercial this year, you might have to wait for the post-game show. The Publishers Clearing House live commercial announcing the company's 10 million dollar Super Prize Winner was the first Super Bowl spot to be transmitted and broadcast in the 16 x 9 wide screen format.
The Publishers Clearing House spot was produced by the New York-based D S Simon Productions. Super Bowl XXXVI marks theeighth straight Super Bowl Sunday that D S Simon Productions and their 25-person crew will be traveling the country with the Publishers Clearing House Prize Patrol to shoot the commercial live from the home of the grand-prize winner.

This year's Super Bowl telecast by Fox is the first to telecast the broadcast of the game in both 16 x 9 wide screen and the traditional 4 x 3 broadcast formats. The game is not being broadcast in HDTV. According to Fox, this commercial is the only one on the program that will be provided to the network in 16 x 9.

Douglas Simon, President & CEO of D S Simon Productions, will be directing his 17th live commercial for the leading sweepstakes company. "The Fox production team asked us if we could transmit the commercial in the wide screen format," says Simon. He adds, "We had to find out where the winner was before we could commit to the wide screen transmission." After learning the secret location three days before the big game, the decision to transmit the commercial in the wide screen format was made. "Now our biggest concern is if the winner will be home," adds Simon.

In its promotional efforts for their big Super Bowl commercial, Publishers Clearing House is also working with D S Simon Productions to produce a quick turnaround B-Roll to distribute to television stations nationwide after the winner is announced live. "The suspense and anticipation of the winning moment makes this one of the most exciting projects to work on," says Simon. He adds, "We've had everything from a priest winning, to a girl in towel, to no one being home."
